Dear Parent or Guardian,

Starting in February, Wamogo’s mental health team is offering a grief and loss support group, open to all high school students. Group will meet once a week during WIT, and follows a 10-session curriculum designed to support adolescents in all stages of grief after experiencing the loss of someone special to them. Lesson plans utilize age-specific activities and discussions to approach highly sensitive and painful topics, and connects participants to peers experiencing a similar loss. There is no universal way, sequence, or timing in which to grieve; therefore, this curriculum encourages students to approach and express grief so they may learn to adapt to these thoughts and feelings beyond group.

Group is structured around two main focus areas: “head work” and “heart work”. Specifically, the “head work” model is designed to educate members on death-related topics, healthy coping strategies, and self-care techniques, while “heart work” encourages members to get in touch with their feelings, validate the pain of their loss, and normalize their experiences. It is important to note that this group and curriculum is designed to provide support, not clinical-level therapy. Some teens experiencing strong responses (either in intensity or duration) may indicate need to receive a higher level of individual or family counseling, instead of or in addition to the bereavement group. With this in mind, group facilitators may engage families in the referral process with appropriate outside mental health agencies, as needs are assessed.

In order to sign the student up, please visit this link and fill out the form by Friday, February 21st, with as much detail as you are willing to share. Responses are confidential and automatically sent to the team/facilitators for review. Participants and families will be notified when the first session will start. For continuity purposes, once the group begins session 2, new members will not be considered, though referrals to outside services or future groups can be made.
